Associate Vice President for Finance/Controller Job Description The Associate Vice President for Finance/Controller is responsible for leading and managing the day-to-day financial operations of the College.
This position reports to the Vice President for Finance and Operations and supervises a total of 7 FTEs.
Essential Duties Summary The responsibilities of Associate Vice President/Controller include the following: Supervise general accounting, student accounts, and accounts payable activities.
Ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all the Colleges financial transaction.
Implement and maintain a strong internal control system.
Implement systems of cash flow management and reporting, which includes monitoring and providing for institutional cash needs and shepherding the Colleges banking relationships.
Prepare and analyze periodic internal and external financial reports.
Plan, prepare and supervise the annual and A-133 audits of the Colleges financial statements.
Supervise and review preparation of required Federal and State tax returns - 990, 1098, 1099.
Prepare and file annual sales tax returns as required.
Prepare and review of monthly and quarterly reconciliations.
Oversee the Colleges investments and endowment funds in collaboration with the Colleges External Chief Investment Officer, Commonfund.
Record and report on the Colleges fixed assets, reserves, and unrestricted and restricted gifts and endowments.
Collaborate with the Vice President for Finance and Operations, Assistant Vice President for Finance, and other members of the Vice Presidents staff, in the development, reporting, and analysis of the annual, capital and multi-year budgets.
Prepare and present reports to the Board of Trustees, senior leadership team, faculty, staff and students.
Collaborate with the other direct reports to the Vice President for Finance & Operations in the conduct of their work including carrying out, recording, analyzing, and reporting on activities.
Respond to informational requests from stakeholders including financial institutions, credit rating agencies, accrediting agencies and professional associations.
Support financial reporting and analysis for other departments of the College, as needed.
Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Finance and Operations Required Qualifications Bachelors degree in accounting, finance or related field and a CPA designation required Masters Degree (Business, Accounting or Finance) preferred Substantial accounting/financial leadership experience in Higher Education, or a similarly complex not-for-profit organization and directly applicable/comparable senior-level controllership experience including: Fund accounting; Grant management and reporting; Cash/treasury management; Endowment accounting and reporting; Cost control and variance analysis; Successful supervision of accounting and financial staffs; Management of external and internal audit functions; and Substantial cash/treasury management.
Ability to lead, motivate, organize, and manage diverse staff team effectively.
Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, especially as applied in Higher Education or the Non-Profit sector.
Working knowledge of computerized accounting general ledger and information systems, as well as spreadsheet and database software.
Demonstrated ability to design and manage a strong internal control environment.
Working knowledge of treasury management in higher education including funds origination and disbursement methodologies.
Demonstrated ability to prepare detailed/reliable cash flow projections.
Ability to prepare and communicate comprehensive, detailed financial analyses.
Ability to analyze policies/practices, develop new and amend existing policies/procedures to improve internal controls and enhance asset preservation and effectiveness.
Excellent communication skills (oral, written and listening), including the ability to effectively communicate complex financial concepts and materials to various non-financial audiences.
Willingness and ability to contribute to effective strategic planning.
Strong interpersonal skills.
